Printer Resolution

Resolution refers to the number of dots that can be placed in a square inch, more dots per inch result in finer detail, which makes text characters sharper and color images cleaner. A 300-dpi (dots per inch) printer is one that is capable of printing 300 distinct dots in a line 1 inch long.

These dpi numbers serve as minimum resolution for the respective task below:

  • General-purpose text and graphics - 300 dpi
  • Higher-quality text and graphics - 600 dpi
  • Photo quality images - 1 200 dpi
  • Professional photo quality images/graphics - 2 400 dpi

Keep in mind that all the printer manufacturers also use all kind of other technologies for better print quality. Some 300 dpi printers can have better print qualities than a 600 dpi. Always ask around and try to inform you self as much as possible about the various techniques that the printer manufacturers take use of before deciding what printer to buy.

Also keep in mind that 300 dpi printers will serve you just fine if you're going to be printing texts mostly and simpler graphics so don't loose your self in the dpi game and buy an expensive printer you'll not be able to take full advantage of as you don't need all the fancy dpis. :)
